How Is Mold Removed From Ceiling Tiles?

At CCS Cleaning & Restoration, we offer residential, commercial and industrial cleaning and restoration services in the greater Faribault, Owatanna, Northfield, and Southern Minnesota areas. One of the lesser known tasks that we are able to perform is removing mold from ceiling tiles. If there has been a leaky pipe or a leak in the roof, moisture can sit on ceiling tiles and eventually mildew or mold can develop. Here are the steps we follow when properly cleaning these tiles.

Before the Removal Process Can Begin

Before we are able to remove mold from ceiling tiles, you must first identify where the moisture is coming from and correct the problem. If the problem is not corrected, the mold will continue to grow and thrive within the ceiling tiles. A repair company can help you identify where the moisture is coming from.

Removing the Mold

The first step that we will do in safely cleaning mold from your ceiling tiles is to remove the mold. After tarping off the area to ensure that mold spores do not spread, we will use a mild detergent cleaner mixed with water to scrub the mold away from the ceiling tiles. We will continue to use a soft-bristled cleaning brush to scrub away all of the mold, while also removing other debris from the tile, such as dirt, dust, and mildew.

Air Dry

After using a cleanser to remove mold from the tiles, we will allow them to air dry. When possible, fans are used, or windows are opened to help speed up the drying process. The tiles need to be completely dry before the next step in the process can be completed. In extremely humid conditions, dehumidifiers may need to be brought in to help the ceiling tiles dry.

Spraying Bleach

The last step in safely ridding ceiling tiles of mold is to spray a mixture of bleach and water on the tiles. Bleach helps to kill any remaining mold spores that may be hiding within the tile. This helps to prevent the mold from growing back. Spraying bleach also helps to kill any mildew-like scents that may remain on the ceiling tile.

After the Removal Process

Unfortunately, mold can permanently stain your ceiling tiles. Removing the mold cannot remove these stains. After the process of mold removal is complete, you may wish to call in a painter to paint the tiles for aesthetic reasons.
